Someone on page 12 mentioned the Natatorium. I had forgotten that place. My wife took swimming lessons there in the early 60's and we both went swimming there on occasion.

The Public Natatorium that most remember was located at 1646 S. 4th St.
It was built in 1894 and sold to J.J. & Margaret Garlic in 1978 for $4,000.

They remodeled it into a Restaurant which closed in 1985.

The site is now part of Norbert R. Witkowiak Park and can be viewed on Google maps, including a street view.

I know Milwaukee had THREE on the southside alone. I lived a block from one. Some days were "girls" days and son some were "boys" days.
For some reason when we were small my friends and I pronounced it Nadatoriums. So we`d always say, "Let`s go to the Nad". Grin
I remember getting a chance to go inside the one on 10th and Hayes before they tore it down. Smiley It looked SO MUCH smaller then when I was a kid. AND, once it was torn down, the empty lot left never looked big enough to have ever had a building that had a swimming pool in it ever on that site. Undecided
