Remember the "Alternate Site" at the Milwaukee lakefront by the gun club? Sunday afternoons, a few semi-warm cans of Pabst, girls in halter tops, and some of the greatest bands in the Milwaukee area playing for free under the sun. Always fun, except when the police would send in their UC's for a drug bust. Good clean fun, nobody got hurt; lots of great memories and music.

"Squash test: Not the same. New variety does not have an outer skin like the originals, which cracked and turned white when compressed. These squash down, with similar properties of a 'rubber cabinet door bumper'."
Ahhh , the famous Squash Test! I bet they use corn syrup, rather then good old fashion sugar! |

Taste test on reproduction candy raisins from Blain's Farm and Fleet on 4/3/15. The manufacturer was not named, but only said the product was distributed by them.
The shape is different, looking like the mold used for "Dots". I found the taste to be close, but not like the originals. These have a slightly citrus after taste, which the originals did not. Chewing taste is pretty close. Maybe rosin is the missing ingredient? Squash test: Not the same. New variety does not have an outer skin like the originals, which cracked and turned white when compressed. These squash down, with similar properties of a 'rubber cabinet door bumper'. The color is close, but pale to the originals, as remembered. I give this latest variety an '8' with '10' being correct. |

The Sears store- what memories. Not only the smell of the popcorn, but the roasting of the Spanish peanuts!!! I remember a few celebrity signings back in the '60's. Warren Spahn, Don Chandler, and Fuzzy Thurston were three I remember standing in line for.
If you had "husky" kids in your family, they got their clothes at Goldman's. |

I grew up on the southwest side of Milwaukee, where there were numerous small businesses along Forest Home Avenue. Most of them have been long gone... Among them all along Forest Home: I grew up near 60th St & Morgan Ave so familiar with those places. You may recall the 'Old Grove' Kroger location was later used as a Milway Department store. I remember Ted and the butcher well. Butcher / deli guy would always ask "Do you vont zum potato salad?". The store was an IGA, pretty dingy and old looking but convenient.1. Tom's Hobby Shop at about 63rd St., where you could race slot cars, buy cool models, etc. A real hobby shop. 2. The "Grove" strip mall at 60th St., where there was a Kroger, the Chi Am Chinese restaurant, a five and dime, and the Badger Paint hardware store. 3. Willy's White Rock tavern, at 60th. The only time I got to go inside was for Trick or Treat. 4. Ted's store, between 58th and 60th streets- a real neighborhood store, and quite a good meat cutter. 5. Larry's Shoe Shop, at about 51st street, in a little curved building with a couple of other tenants. 6. McCarthy American Motors dealership, at 51st. 7. Boy Blue ice cream, at about 49th. 8. Chappie's Sporting Goods, at around 47th st. A real sporting goods store that had everything. 9. Dutchland Dairy, at around 46th; the cheapest fish fry around. 10. Wally's gas station, across the street from Dutchland Dairy. It was a DX, then a Sunoco. Another memory is of the very last of the iconic ultra modern Wisco 99 service stations being opened at 68th & Forest Home. The building is still standing, being used as an auto repair facility. |

BOY , that last name of your uncle is a familar one from my childhood days living in that area.
Anyone remember the Tavern a block away from that photo. It was on 7th and Harrison. Great corner tap. Mom and pop kind of place. Great place to enjoy a cold one, and have some conversations with your neighbors. |

Yes, many surprises on that site. I recently found photos of my Grand Uncles home (Uncle Joe).
