Title: South Side Sausage Co.
Post by: daveirek on June 27, 2013, 04:19:47 AM
I have found an advertising bullet pencil from the South Side Sausage Co. in a box of goodies from my father in laws estate. It lists two locations on Mitchell St. I can't find any information on this business. I wonder if anyone remembers anything about it like, when it was in business, or what types of sausage they made and how good it was. I'm guessing from what I know of my father in laws history that it may be from the late 50's or early sixties. Post what you can or e-mail me at daveirek@btc-bci.com. Thanks for your help. Dave

Found a little info from 1977 (attached). Opened in 1917, closed in 1983. Do a Google search on Roman Antkowski (founder) for the complete story.

I remember SouthSide Sausage, but I don`t recall two locations on Mitchell street.

There was also a sausage shop on Lincoln ave.. I think it was between 13th and 14th street, on the southside of Lincoln ave.

If anyone wants to try some great sausage and meat now, try A J DELI on 12th and Lincoln ave. :P It will take you back to the good old days. ;)

thanks for the info so far. The hunt is always the best part. The pencil lists 2 locations of 1711 W. Mitchell, phone MI 5-7108 and 1023 W. Mitchell, phone OR 2-0837. It's fun just saying the old phone numbers. Also the Antkowski article was a great read and very informative.

My Grandparents lived on the South Side, and my favorite item from the South Side Sausage Company were juicy little items called Polish Delights.  Small and spiced, but not too spicy for a kid, I still can conjure their aroma as they came from the pot of simmering water.

I remember "Polish Delights". :P

I don`t know if they are one in the same.

The ones I remember were probably half the the size of a hot dog, and they were smoked.

We didn`t boil them in water. We simmered them in a pan with chopped onion!

Do you recall where your Grandparents lived??
