Title: BEFORE Walmart Post by: Roadsnakes on August 29, 2012, 02:25:33 PM WAY before Walmart, we had some real cool big box stores!
Remember MOREWAY , ATLANTIC MILLS, SPARTAN, Arlans, let us not forget the late great GOLDMANS! When you were a kid going to one of those stores was GREAT!!!! Everything you dreamed about was there, all under one roof! Title: Re: BEFORE Walmart Post by: Roadsnakes on August 30, 2012, 12:44:04 PM I think Arlans was one of the last to go. I bought a old "newsboy" type cap there in 71' or 72'.
Braeger Chevy is at the spot where Spartan used to be. Title: Re: BEFORE Walmart Post by: timmyj3 on September 03, 2012, 09:41:40 AM I always like the Treasure Island on S. 27th Street. They had a cool sporting goods department and some neat Packers and NFL memorabilia before it was really in. My dad loved the More-Way on Layton avenue for car parts. Had to keep his 64 Pontiac Executive up to par. Title: Re: BEFORE Walmart Post by: Roadsnakes on September 03, 2012, 11:22:31 AM HOW did I omit TREASURE ISLAND!? :o
It actually was a subsidairy of J C Penny. Clothing was very good stuff. They also had a good record department. Bought a lot of 45`s there. I guy I work with now told me stories about his underage drinking parties. They were held in the wooded area behind Treasure Island. He and his buddies called "T I Woods" ! ;) Title: Re: BEFORE Walmart Post by: timmyj3 on September 04, 2012, 06:34:31 AM The old TI. My best friend in high school got caught shoplifting albums at that store ??? ??? ???. What stupid stuff we did. The record dept. was good though.
They also had a grocery store. It had a unique feature with a conveyor system that would roll your groceries out to the pick up area if you wanted. It was a good store. Actually ahead of its time. Title: Re: BEFORE Walmart Post by: Lindee on September 06, 2012, 09:46:18 AM How about Zayre? They took over the Treasure Island stores when they closed.
Title: Re: BEFORE Walmart Post by: timmyj3 on September 06, 2012, 06:26:38 PM Fist things: Hello Lindee! I remember that Zayre! God what a dump toward the end of their run. I was in there once and they just took returns and threw them in a pile by the customer service area. Wow! I do remember them. When I was a kid in the early 70's Point Loomis was really a nice secondary shopping center. Title: Re: BEFORE Walmart Post by: Roadsnakes on September 09, 2012, 05:02:14 AM ZAYRE ! ::) Can`t forget that hole. It was defintely a precursor for Walmart.
Narrow aisles that were a mess by the afternoon. Reminds me of Walmart. ;) |
